Retail NI Reaction to Prime Minister's Waterfront Hall Speech

Peter McBride and the Prime Minister in Belleek

The President of Retail NI, Fermanagh based independent retailer, Peter McBride has welcomed the commitments of the Prime Minister of no hard border and described the likelihood of ‘no deal’ as disastrous for Northern Ireland.

Peter McBride represented Retail NI at a round-table meeting in Belleek with the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland yesterday.

Commenting on the Belleek round-table meeting and the Waterfront Hall Speech, Retail NI President Retail Peter McBride said:

“This was a very welcome opportunity to meet the Prime Minister to highlight the concerns of Retail NI members as we approach Brexit”

‘She was very that clear that no hard border infrastructure will be established by the UK Government and equally no borders between Northern Ireland and rest of the UK”

On the Waterfront Hall Speech, Peter said:

“While far from perfect, the recent White Paper is a step forward and does represent a more realistic basis for the forthcoming Brexit negotiations”

“We welcome the commitment to a free trade area for goods which we hope will protect the integrated supply chain which is important for the retail sector”

“While this White Paper is progress, we have still a very long way to go in the negotiations. This may require further changes to give stronger protection to its commitments”

“Any prospect of the UK crashing out of the EU with no agreement would be a disaster and needs to be avoided at all costs”
