Retail NI Calls for Flexible Approach to Rapid Transit Bus Lanes

As the the new Rapid Transit Bus Lanes go live in West Belfast from today, Retail NI has urged the Department for Infrastructure to keep the 12 hour time period under review and to consider enforcement of the bus lanes at only peak times in the morning and evening.

Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said:

“Retail NI has always supported the new Rapid Transit plans as a means to address congestion. We want to see shoppers and other city centre workers use the Gilder and make public transport their first option rather than their last”

“Given that we have had one trader closing his business on the Falls Road and a number of other concerns in East Belfast over the loss of parking, we would urge the Department for Infrastructure to reconsider enforcement of the bus lanes in the peak rush-hour times in the morning and evening, rather than over the12 hour period”

“This could address the concerns of local traders in relation to parking”

“This scheme is a long overdue investment for Belfast’s transport infrastructure and we want to see it succeed. With a little bit of flexibility, we can ensure no independent trader is negatively impacted”
