PayPals Louise Phelan Outlines the Future of Money at Smart Business Show

Last year Bitcoin caught the worlds attention with a Norwegian man making £1,330,000 from a £27 investment. In 2009 Kristoffer Koch spent £27 on 5,000 Bitcoins. Fast forward to 2013 when the value of Bitcoins hit £266 a pop which gave Koch a healthy profit of £1,330,000. Powerful to say the least, or is this just a monetary dotcom bubble? What is the future for money, virtually and digitally?

PayPal’s Vice President of Global Operations EMEA Louise Phelan will be meeting with top business people from across Ireland at the Smart Business Show at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, on 29 & 30 May 2014. Louise will be delivering her keynote address - ‘Money Makes the World Go Round; from barter to Bitcoin’ in the Keynote Theatre. In addition to being a non-executive director of Ryanair, Louise has a sideboard full of awards, amongst which are the Sir Michael Smurfit Achievement Award from The Ireland Chamber of Commerce United States and several Business Woman of the Year accolades.

Money is evolving faster than ever in the digital now. Global giants’ eBay are considering allowing customers to use Bitcoin for payment for both eBay and PayPal, sources inside the company told CNBC. PayPal’s President David Marcus predicts money will leap forward with mobile stating, “If you’re in an advanced metro area in the UK, you will not have to carry your wallet to buy things.” And PayPal are not sluggish in the digital payment industry, managing a huge infrastructure to handle £180 billion a year in transactions and 143 million active customers.

Whilst some bricks and mortar stores are struggling to compete with online behemoths such as Amazon and eBay, many high street retailers are becoming ‘showrooms’ for consumers to examine a product before buying it elsewhere. PayPal now dominate online payments as the integral system for clients such as eBay, SAP, Amazon, Microsoft Dynamics, PLAY.com and SAGE. This fascinating address by Louise Phelan will help show local businesses how they can keep up to date with digital money and what the future holds.
