NIIRTA welcomes PAC decision to uphold Buncrana Road Tesco rejection

The Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA) has welcomed today's decision of the Planning Appeals Commission to uphold the DOE Planning Service decision to reject a proposed Tesco store on Buncrana Road.

NIIRTA, along with a number of businesses in Derry/Londonderry had made representations opposing the application at the PAC Hearing in November last year.

NIIRTA Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said:

"This is good news for not just for Derry City Centre traders, but also for Northside and Springtown district centres in the City."

"NIIRTA has always maintained that these types of stores need to be located in City Centres, rather than in unsustainable out-of-town locations which draw away footfall, trade and ultimately jobs."

"Derry City Centre should  be the top priority for future retail development as it still has a serious problem with shop vacancies. It is vital that independent and multiple retailers work together to achieve this."
